ELK RIVER FARM: Site Portfolio
Soils Map
S01 Sandberg loamy coarse sand (258B)
Soils in this series are loamy course sand that formed over coarse or moderately coarse glacial outwash sediments or glacial beach deposits. They are very deep, excessively drained, and not prone to flooding or ponding. With slopes between 1 to 6 percent and rapid permeability, these soils are not prone to water erosion.
Areas of these soils are used for cultivated crops, hay or pasture. A few areas are in woodland. Native vegetation is mixed prairie grasses with scattered oak hardwoods.
Under long-term agricultural use, up to two-thirds of the original surface layer may be lost due to wind erosion; the remaining surface layer is often mixed with subsoil during plowing.
The site is located on glacial river outwash characterized by nearly level or gently rolling sandy soils that formed over deeply leached sands or calcareous gravel.
This soils section includes all the data on soils for the Elk River Farm site. Clicking on the markers in each map unit will produce a description of the soil series. More information about characteristics of the soils on the Elk River Farm site can be found by clicking on the Soils List.
