ELK RIVER FARM: Site Portfolio
Site Description
The 125 acres are currently owned by the land trust and have two residences with some outbuildings within the property. About half of the property is currently cultivated (corn) under a rental agreement with a neighboring landowner. This area will continue to be farmed until restoration plans are implemented. The land trust plans to eventually restore most or all of the area that is currently farmed and has been for the past 100 years.
A portion of a very large wetland occupies the western portion of the property. The Elk River and associated floodplain forests form the eastern border. The northeastern portion of the property is an oak woodland and prairie, that because of its outstanding biodiversity and condition, was designated a State Natural Area in 2000.
